Stick by stick, what a magical moment watching a pair of Magpies start to build the new nest of the year.Watching in awe . Flipping gorgeous, I am biased as I love the intelligent magpies, many don’t. Many see the strutting black and white bird as a pest.
I’m going to defend them here. You always find that people say , I hate them because they kill baby birds. Yes they do , but so do cats. It’s a Scientific fact that has been studied. We also have the small bird decline because of people! . Yep ! Us folk need to wash our bird feeders as they hold diseases . If not washed regularly some birds become affected by this.
Most of the greenfinch population has been wiped out in the Uk. Then we have pesticides. Then persecution of magpies goes on with fen traps by farmers. I’m not saying they shouldn’t be controlled because some years we have a glut of them. Just be sensible in your thinking 🤔. 😂💚. Good on you!
Getting back to the magnificent colours, not just black and white. Have you seen the tail feathers?.
There far from just being just black ! They are almost translucent in their shades of green , purply blue. Have you seen one close up.? . well I’d imagine you wouldn’t be able to get up close to my black and white fancy. They are so shy.. or flighty. But then again it has been know to tame such a bird. This was once my boyhood dream . To have a tame magpie. The opportunity never really came about for me . But I live in hope. For this to happen, one would have to bring one up from a chick. Or unless one had them frequently visiting your land and you fed them lots . I’m really not sure this would work . There use to be a few people around Britain who use to breed all British birds under special license. I believe the pens had to be inspected on them being built. The welfare for the birds was paramount even in them days of the early 80’s. The governing body had to make sure the pens or flights where large enough for such birds. Birds like magpies or thrushes of even birds of prey need to be in sizeable Flights of pens. Much of this had to be of a certain height. Yes , you can guess, I did look into the aspects of keeping birds. This was a teenage thing for me , so those days I didn’t have my own space and still don’t for that sort of thing.
Now I just love watching them in the wilds and this morning was just great. I had five minutes spare so I parked up just before I had to pick one of my workers up. So there I was under a small tree , not a huge one like magpies normally go for. I began to watch this one bird as I sat in my van, under the grey skies.
I was honestly only about 8 ft away. The bird was sat on a lower branch, then it would flit away for a second, then come back , as magpies do 😂, then float to the ground. I thought 💭, what is the bird up to? . Maybe there was some food down there! . No, it was a stick, well more like a little twig. He or she picked the twig up and bounced it’s way to the very top of the tree. Oh there was it’s partner waiting. This was the very first twig placed in the tree as they start to build between themselves a nursery for their chicks.

Just think of the hundreds , maybe even thousands of twigs they’ll source. It felt like a very special moment for me as well for the birds. Magical. I certainly will be watching this nest as it’s starts to get bigger. Twig by twig or Step by step, like us as we stride on in our lives to make all possibilities come to life🌟👊🌟. Magical 🌟.
