Hi ! ,
well I’m not asking for a Golden eagle in my back garden or fieldfare or tiny Goldcrest , although I have had one of them! a few years back. What I am asking for , is for my goldfinch’s to come back from their summer flights of fancy.. Where the heck have they disappeared too? .
Earlier in the year I had a small group of about 6 birds visiting my feeders every day, with the odd glimpse of a rare sight of a Greenfinch. Very rare in my neck of the woods. Although if I ask other people on my gardening round, they’d say they’ve seen some. In fact I don’t seem to get any birds of fancy even though I give the best sunflower hearts to eat. So for me the battle of the birds is on the cards to try and entice them back or even visit for the first time. I feed all year round , so it’s not as though I’ve neglected them at anytime. I’m lucky if I get a Blue tit never mind a Great tit! .
I have a squadron of little house Sparrows who generally Squabble over the food and if I put out fatballs, I’ll get inundated with Starlings. Both sets of birds are apparently in the decline, so maybe I’m the saviour of these two species. The Starling is quite an attractive bird close up with its feathers of iridescent colours, simply quite good to gaze upon. 💚.
Recently I’ve decided to give them more variety of foods , like a special blend of seeds and some Niger seed , a seed that the Goldfinches love. So far after a few days, it hasn’t made any difference. My friend Tom has an array of different birds like two woodpeckers, all the tits and finches , he lives on the edges of the countryside. so maybe that’s the difference? .. He is a very lucky man. I can only keep trying to entice them in .x
